John Rego studied with Prof. Yefim Stesin (formerly of the Piano Faculty at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire). After being awarded his primary degree with the highest distinction, he travelled to New York for a period of intensive and advanced performance studies at the Juilliard School of Music. He worked with Herbert Stessin, Arkady Aronov, Gregor Haimovsky, and Emmanuel Ax in New York. Following this, he received a full scholarship to study at Oxford University. During this post-graduate research, Dr. Rego also worked with several scholars from both Oxford and Cambridge Universities on aesthetics, philosophy, and music. After living in Kraków and London and other parts of Europe, he took up a fellowship at Princeton University and completed a major study on Russian pianism.

He has concertised extensively on four continents as both a pianist and conductor, and has also been an invited speaker at several international conferences and lectured at various renowned universities. Most recently, he has been invited to teach postgraduate seminars and present masterclasses at the Shanghai Central Conservatory, Qingdao University, Putian University, and the Fujian Piano Association.

At the Mantinea Institute, Dr. John Rego provides expert guidance on a range of substantive and programmatic decisions related to music and musical education. In addition, he represents the Mantinea Institute in partnerships with collaborating institutions in Australia and China.
